UNIT 22: Single Camera Techniques

Shooting Scenario Exercise

·         Characters: Only  2  on screen, plus 1 off screen, ie on phone or in voice over (V/O)
·         Props: At least 1 from the following: mobile phone, purse/ wallet, set of keys, data card/stick, bag.
·         Locations: at least 2 from: classroom, just-outside-classroom, stairs, barrier, college EXT

A    Devise a short story using the above ingredients
        Write the short story in the form of storyboards or a list, eg

1.    Woman enters room
2.    Woman sees phone on table
3.    The phone rings

OR
1.    Student1  gets up and  leaves the classroom leaving data stick on desk
2.    Student2 starts to laugh/cry
3.    Student1 returns looking furious
4.    Student2’s  phone rings

Draw up a shot list to tell your story. For example:

1.    LS Woman walks down corridor towards classroom
2.    CU Her hand reaching for the door handle
3.    MS classroom, woman strides through the door

C Shoot your story.
      Each student must take a production role.
1.    The Director, direct your short story from your shot list. Give the crew and cast direction.
2.    Crew Member, Take a technical crew role, camera, sound or assistant camera. Take direction from the director, make constructive suggestions of your own.
3.    Actor, Take an acting role, play a character and take direction from the director. Make constructive suggestions of your own.

D Write an evaluation of the whole process.
     Each student must write a short evaluation for your finished video and your          production role;
1.    Direction, Explain what it was like to direct your short story, do you think it was successful, why?
2.    Crew Role, What was your crew role, explain what this entailed, did you perform it well?

3.    Actor, Describe the character you acted, describe what you did, was it a good performance, why?
